14 Oct 2007 - Huddersfield Youth Contest

The band enjoyed their first contesting experience under the direction of Brian . The contest is held at Rastrick High School and is always popular with the band for the quality of the 'refreshments' and the 'entertainment.' As usual the band members preferred their own style of 'entertainment' rather than listening to the opposition in the hall. Never mind! Great fun to see the massed team of Dobcross Youth Band taking on the world at football and doing very well! Some parents have commented that they were rather surprised that their youngsters arrived home in muddy uniform and shoes when they'd supposedly been at a brass band contest.
Anyway back to the performance. The band gave a good show opening with the march, Honest Toil , playing a hymn beautifully and a performing the Little Maids with good style. The adjudicator's comments were very encouraging and the band were reasonably satisfied with their 4th place out of 9 bands. Perhaps the march was a rather a challenge! Still we came higher than our local rivals, Boarshurst, which meant of course ,as usual ,the band members could hold their head up high at school the following morning! Think we would also have beat them at football based on what I saw on the day!
