1 Jun 2007 - Whit Friday

Another scorching hot Whit Friday ! This one was a special one to remember. Many thanks to those ex-players who responded to the call to come and support Ted on his last official Whit Friday. It was great to see so many old friends and catch up with the news. It was a long , hot walk there and back to Uppermill but the band looked splendid and the playing was terrific. Highlight of the walk back of course being the Basses determination to be under that arch as they played!

The evening contests were fun as usual. We had a packed coach and Gillian kept us supplied with much appreciated fruit and bottles of water for the duration of the evening. We managed 8 contests this year - once again finding that the Saddleworth contests develop queues quite early on. Still we enjoyed our stop at Greenacres where we saw Black Dyke play and Uppermill was good where we stocked up on chips and burgers as we waited for our turn!

Back at Dobcross the band found they were the last to march to the field where they played the hymn and brought the contest to a close.

Many thanks to the B.B.Q. team led by Nick and Bernadette Fitton with help from other parents, friends and supporters. They had worked hard all night and raised much appreciated funds for the band.

A pleasing set of results for the night. The band were placed first in the Youth Sections at Friezland and at Dobcross. They also won the Cornet Youth Prize (Alice Nowicki) and the Youth Soloist Prize (Jan Nowicki - EbBass) at Dobcross. At Delph they won the prize for the Highest Placed Saddlworth Band. So a good night's work. Well done everyone!
